The beginning: 2009
The idea of starting a food co-op in East Aurora began to take hold in late 2009. By early 2010, plans were in full gear to launch a food co-op in East Aurora. On February 28, 2010, the recently incorporated East Aurora Cooperative Market presented the movie “Food, Inc.” followed by a panel discussion at the Aurora Theatre.
The co-op was born!
The all-volunteer EACM Mini Market was launched, member-ownership count grew to over 500, and the co-op was proud to be one of the recipients of Food Co-op Initiative’s $10,000 Seed Grant.
Along the way, the Board of Directors, co-op committees and countless volunteers worked with national co-op development groups and consultants to set the stage for the store.
After a long and thorough search, EACM announced its future home; 591 Main Street in East Aurora.
Store designers and architects set to work creating the plans for our store.
EACM owners came together to raise over $880,000 to build their co-op, surpassing the capital campaign goal.
The campaign success demonstrating incredible community support for a Co-op in the Southtowns.
Making a Co-op: 2015
Hiring! Demolition! Construction! Preparations were in full swing throughout 2015,
and member-ownership had soared to over 1100!
The first half of 2016 was focused on finishing construction, completing the second phase of our Capital Campaign, welcoming new member-owners to reach our at-opening goal of 1500, hiring staff, ordering stock, getting systems in place, and doing the long list of things to prepare for opening day and beyond…
… and with all of those items complete, milestones achieved and shopping carts ready,
the East Aurora Co-op Market opened for business on June 8, 2016!
Sincere thanks to all of those who shepherded this project through the startup phase
and to all of those who will see it long and successfully into the future!
